What does a typical school trip or educational visit include?

Depending on the activity booked, workshops will include a short tour of one of the collections, a handling session with musical instruments, and the booked activity. Tours will focus more on the instruments in the display galleries, but can also include a handling session if desired.

How long can a visit last?

Primary and secondary school workshops range from 1-2 hours, with some sessions taking a half day including lunch break. Tours can be from 30 minutes to 1 hour.

How can we get to the museum by public transport?

Reid Concert Hall is located in Bristo Square, just to the left of McEwen Hall through the iron gates. Come to the stage door, where the museum entrance is located, and ring the bell (post code: EH8 9AG).

St Cecilia’s Hall is located in the Cowgate, just off Niddry Street. The main entrance is down a close just next to the Smart City Hostel. A bell is located on the left side of the main entrance. (post code: EH1 1NQ)

Parking : Car parking in the centre of Edinburgh is metered, but there are also a number of car parks near to St Cecilia’s Hall, such as the Niddry Street Car Park, Waverly Car Park and St John’s Hill Car Park. Where can we park when travelling to the Museum by coach?

Coach parking is available year round in designated coach parking bays located on Regent Road and Johnston Terrace, which is a 10 minute walk from St Cecilia’s Hall and 15+ minutes from the Reid Concert Hall. There is a minimal hourly charge and the bays are operational between 8.30am and 6.30pm from Monday to Saturday.

What kinds of workshops do you offer?

We run a wide range of practical, hands-on workshops, led by musical instrument specialists throughout the year.  In addition, tours or other activities can be arranged to cater for special interests and a varied needs, just ask!

What size groups do you cater for?

The maximum size for workshops is 30-32, but it is strongly recommended that classes are split into two for the workshops. The maximum size groups for the keyboard galleries at St Cecilia’s Hall is 16, but if enough adults are present, a larger group can be split into two for tours and self-led activities. Please see the website for specific details.

How many adults per child should we bring?

We require a minimum of a 1:10 adult to child ratio for children and young people under the age of 17. The more adults you bring the better. Please get in contact with the Learning and Access Officer to discuss any needs of the visiting group.

What does a visit cost?

Entrance to the museum is FREE and there are no charges for workshops or events, although these must be booked in advance.

What facilities do you have for school trips and educational visits?

We have a beautiful space in the Laigh Room of St Cecilia’s hall that school groups can use for eating brought bag lunches. Toilet facilities are located nearby. Please note on the booking form if the lunch space is required during your visit. Food and drink must not be consumed in the galleries.

Do you have any disabled facilities?

If any member of your party has any special requirements we will be happy to provide the following facilities to make your visit as enjoyable as possible.

Please contact the Learning and Access Officer regarding any access requirements eg. entrance access, lifts and toilet facilities.

Do you have first aid on site?

We have fully qualified first-aiders on site at all times and first-aid kits are situated in the museum offices. We also have a clear procedure for recording any accidents or near-misses, to help prevent similar occurrences happening again.

How do you arrange a risk assessment?

The museum’s public exhibitions and public areas have been assessed and are maintained as safe spaces for our visitors. All our workshops, activities and events have been risk assessed and copies of these are available in either printed or electronic form from the Learning and Access Officer.

Can I take photos, video or audio inside the museum?

We are happy for you to take photos, video or audio recordings of your own group anywhere in the museum. For use in publications, please contact the museum for permission.

What support do you offer for teachers organising a school trip or educational visit?

If you have any questions regarding the workshops, please contact the Learning and Access Officer in the first instance. In addition, a number of support materials are available online, including teacher packs and risk assessments.
